Portland Parks and Recreation is seeking a Recreation Coordinator II- Fitness in the Park.


About the Position

The Recreation division of Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides recreation opportunities including Fitness in the Park at multiple locations outdoors in parks throughout the summer season. Work involves program development and implementation; assessing needs; working with various community groups; and promotion of Fitness in the Park. This position schedules fitness classes and works with fitness instructors and customer service representatives; monitors on-site activities; assigns and directs the work of staff. Assists supervisor with recruiting and hiring part-time and seasonal employees reviews their work and brings performance concerns to supervisor’s attention. The position involves considerable latitude for initiative and originality.


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Coordinates activities in Fitness in the Park including organizing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating.- Conduct needs assessment and, develop and plan programs based on community needs.
  • Assists in developing and monitoring program budgets.
  • Schedules classes and works with instructors in Fitness in the Park and monitors on-site activities.
  • Recruit, assign, and direct the work of recreation support staff assists the supervisor with recruiting and hiring part-time and seasonal employees, review their work, and bringing performance concerns to the supervisor’s attention.
  • Accurate attendance records and writes administration reports, recommend changes to programs based upon information collected, and monitors program fees and revenue.
  • Partner with community organizations to increase access to Fitness in the Park for BIPOC communities.

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their supplemental questions and resume how their education, training, work experience, and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Knowledge and experience of current literature and trends in fitness programming and classes including developing, promoting, scheduling, and coordinating.
  2. Experience recruiting, assigning, and directing work, motivating, and reviewing the performance of Fitness Instructors and Customer Service Representatives.
  3. Experience problem-solving, organizing workloads, and meeting deadlines.
  4. Experience meeting the needs of diverse populations, including cultural, ethnic, and language diversity.
  5. Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as recreation staff, city employees, users, community groups, special interest groups, school district staff, and the public.

Applicants must also possess:

  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by the date of hire.
