About this position:
The Arborist I, provides basic ground support for tree-related work and ground support for higher level arborists as a trainee. Work is performed in a field environment, outdoors in all weather conditions, negotiating rough terrain and working around traffic. Incumbents may be required to lift up to 100 pounds. Arborists work out of Urban Forestry Headquarters, East Delta Park, Portland.
As an Arborist I, you will:
- Prune, remove, apply pest treatment, and plant trees accessible by ground or ladder.
- Operate and maintain equipment, tools, and vehicles used in the care of trees including but not limited to small to mid-size tractors and attachments, trailers, tree spades, air compressors, chippers, stump grinders, and chainsaws.
- Provide traffic and pedestrian control.
- Respond to work during emergencies, both during and after standard shift.
- Remove tree hazards and fallen trees during storms and emergencies
- Answer questions/ concerns from other employees and the public.
- Complete daily work and field reports, organizing and processing needed paperwork or other information-gathering methods.

- Ability to learn professional arboricultural practices including the use and operation of tools and equipment used in the care of trees.
- Ability to learn how to safely and effectively performing assigned work while meeting OSHA and ANSI standards for tree operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers in a diverse workforce, and work constructively within a team.
Applicants must also possess:
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by date of hire.
- A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
- Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of the hire date.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Electrical Hazards Awareness (EHAP) certificate or equivalent within six (6) months of the hire date .
- Ability to obtain a Work Zone Traffic Control Certification within six (6) months of the hire date .
- Ability to obtain an Oregon Public Pesticide Applicators License within two (2) years of the hire date.
