Portland Parks & Recreation is looking to hire Sports League Staff for part-time, year-round employment in the Recreation Division!

Sports League Staff are responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of each participant enrolled in the program. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, show active participation and enthusiasm on the court or field while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff. This position is utilized for our Youth Sports Leagues that are a function of the Sports Office. Examples of these leagues include Saturday Youth Volleyball and Saturday Goldenball programs.


Positions include:

  • Sports League Level II, III, IV
  • Attendant II

These are part-time positions with flexible hours and may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work hours can be assigned verbally and depend on enrollment levels, needs of the program, and other factors. There is no guarantee of the number of hours needed each week nor the number of hours worked from week to week. Employees in these positions serve at will.


RECREATION AIDE - SPORTS LEAGUE STAFF (PARKS ACTIVITIES SPECIALIST)
The Recreation Aide – Sports League Staff is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of each participant enrolled in the program. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, show active participation and enthusiasm on the court or field while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff. This position is utilized for our Youth Sports Leagues that are a function of the Sports Office. Examples of these leagues include Saturday Youth Volleyball and Saturday Goldenball programs.


Training Wage: Training wage is $14.75 for all Sports League Staff positions.


Positions Available:
Positions below are listed in typical progression of Sports League Staff.


Sports League IV: Official/Referee

Sports League Official is responsible for ensuring game safety and knowledge of the specific sport rules and supplemental rules as provided by Portland Parks and Recreation. Must be able to do a minimum of 3 assigned games per Saturday during the assigned season. Be able to communicate effectively with our lead assigner staff, gym host and the public. Show active participation and enthusiasm on the court while serving as a positive role model to all participants and other staff.

Locations: Must be able to travel from site to site of the assigned area.
Age Requirement: Must be at least 15 years old

Wage Range: $25.75 - $30.75 hourly


Sports League II: League Assistant/Roamer

Sports league Assistant or Roamer is responsible for assisting the sports department in staff and game day check-ins. Providing equipment, breaks, possible fill in at an assigned gym, knowledge of league rules. Must be able to train a sports event host on set-up and take down if deemed necessary. Provides excellent customer service in working with staff, coaches, parents, and players. Must have the ability to set-up and take down at the assigned sports venue.

Locations: Must be able to travel from site to site of the assigned area.
Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years old

Wage Range: $17.00 - $18.00 hourly


Sports League III: Lead Assigning Official

Lead Assigning Official is responsible for planning, coordinating, and running the new officials on-court trainings. Knowledge of current league rules as well as national high school federation rules. Has a high level of expertise in evaluating officials. Ability to schedule officials to assigned league games. Must be able to handle conflicts, cancelations and respond to quick game day situations. Lead assigning official must be able to provide excellent customer service while working with staff, coaches, parents, and players.


Locations: This position requires traveling to trainings, staff meetings and game sites.

Wage Range: $17.50 - $20.25 hourly

Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years old



RECREATION ASSOCIATE - ATTENDANT

Attendants monitors drop-in recreation activities in area of assignment. Creates welcoming atmosphere, engages with park and facility guests, provides excellent customer service and is a resource for PP&R information. Maintains clean facilities and/or park spaces, monitors use of space and needs of guests, is proactive in addressing potential safety concerns, upholds the PP&R code of conduct, communicates with supervisor, rangers, and security under established guidelines. Monitors participation and completes needed paperwork and record keeping.

Wages after July 1, 2022: Wages for represented positions are pending until the completion of contract negotiations. The new wage rates will apply retroactively from July 1.


Training Wage: Training wage is $15.00 for all attendant positions.

Positions Available:

Attendant II: Event Host

Creates welcoming atmosphere. Facilitates event set-up and clean-up and physically moves equipment from space to space inside the facility and outdoors. Open and/or close and secure classroom or building. Works independently to monitor use of space and needs of guests. Is proactive in addressing potential safety, concerns, and upholds the PP&R code of conduct. Basic knowledge of in-season sport, and equipment needed relevant to work site/area.


Locations: Must be able to travel from site to site of the assigned area.

Age Requirement: Must be at least 15 years old

Wage Range: $16.75 - $18.00 hourly

  • Demonstrated ability in the sport being supported.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and be able to keep up with the pace of the play.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
