Reed College is looking for our next Community Safety Officer to join our talented staff in Community Safety. This department is a part of the Office of Student Life and a team that supports student success and the mission of the college. Community Safety fulfills the campus safety and security needs by providing a wide range of services, including overseeing emergency preparedness, assisting students, responding to reports of medical and mental health emergencies, reacting to fire and other alarms, and many more supportive services for the campus community. At Reed, Community Safety Officer responsibilities begin with connecting with students, staff, and faculty as community partners. While we receive training typical of traditional security staff, we emphasize service to the community and collaboration across the college.

This is a full time position scheduled to work 40 hours per week. We estimate a schedule of 2pm-10pm, five days a week. This position will have Tuesday and Wednesday off. There may be times when you are asked to work a shift not normally on your schedule.

What you’ll do

  • Survey and evaluate campus environment for safety and security hazards.

  • Respond to medical incidents; fire-related emergencies; alarms and notifications from the alarm systems, including for a nuclear reactor.

  • Respond to all other incidents of crime and campus emergency situations, provide crisis intervention in a higher education setting.

  • Interface and engage in conversation with students and other members of the campus community.

  • Route calls on the main college switchboard.

  • Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls from the college community.
