Portland Parks and Recreation is looking for team-oriented, enthusiastic and qualified staff to operate our 4 year-round indoor and 7 summer outdoor swimming pools. This is a great opportunity to learn leadership skills and help others stay safe and enjoy being in the pool.
All staff are expected to convey good public relations and follow established policies and procedures for a safe, fun, and efficient operation of the City Pools. You must be at least 16 years old to apply. Hours may vary and are based on program needs and job classification.

Wages after July 1, 2022: Wages for represented positions are pending until the completion of contract negotiations. The new wage rates will apply retroactively from July 1.
Lifeguard Wage Range: $15.00 - $17.25 hourly
Swim Instructor Wage Range: $15.50 - $17.75 hourly
Water Fitness Instructor Wage Range: $15.75 - $31.25 hourly
Training Wage for Lifeguard and Swim Instructor positions: $15.00 hourly
Certification must be current through the duration of employment.

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement
As of October 18, 2021, all City employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. This is required for all positions at the City of Portland. Proof of being fully vaccinated is required by date of hire. You may request an exception, for health or religious reasons, from getting the COVID-19 vaccine at the time a position is offered.

- Applicants must have a current or be in the process of obtaining at least one of the following certifications:
- Starguard Lifeguard Certification
- Portland Parks Swim Instructor Certification
- Portland Parks Water Fitness Instructor Certification and/or AEA/Equivalent certification.
- If you have one of the following current certifications, please note it in supplemental question #7.
- American Red Cross, Jeff Ellis & Associates, YMCA, NASCO, or other national lifeguard certification
- Water Safety Instructor, Starfish Aquatics, YMCA, or other swim instructor certification.
Applicants must also possess:
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by date of hire.
An evaluation of each applicant's training and experience, as demonstrated in their answers in their supplemental questions. Do not attach materials not requested. Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list. You have 14 days from the notice of the examination results to let us know if you disagree with your results. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information. Additional evaluation for required certifications may be required prior to the establishment of the eligible list and/or final selection.
