Job Title: Children’s Program Specialist

Reports to: Program Supervisor

Works with: Childcare Provider, Parents

Supervises: volunteers, interns, children

Salary Range: $50,000 - $52,000 annually

Position Summary:

Responsibilities include registering children for school and working with the parents to make sure the children attend classes. The position will also be responsible for planning and operating homework and summer school programs. Work schedule full-time, exempt. Monday to Friday. Some evenings and weekends may be required and will be scheduled in advance. Filling in for the Childcare Provider may be required if childcare subs are not available or if there is a large influx of small children at the shelter.

The working environment for the Children’s Program Specialist includes school age children and their parents in a homeless shelter.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

School-Age Participants:

  • Help parents enroll students in school and arrange for appropriate transportation
  • Provide students with age appropriate school supplies and clothing where possible
  • Conduct Homework Club for school-age children during the school year
  • Communicate with the school district and parents about student progress
  • Individual tutoring of students when possible
  • Keep detailed records of program participation and accomplishments
  • Work with childcare provider to keep all supplies organized and all equipment safe and sanitized
  • Report all needed repairs and safety concerns to the Facility Manager immediately.
  • Cover for Child Care provider during scheduled breaks
  • Fill in for child care provider when childcare subs are not available. Assist the childcare provider with hands on childcare if there is a large influx of small children at the shelter
  • Offsite/Seasonal:

  • Plan out and Direct the Summer School Program. Coordinate resources in preparation for summer school.
  • Partner with outside organizations to develop programs for children and families
  • Coordinate child development programs at satellite locations, including affordable housing complexes
  • Assist parents with applying for and maintaining employment related childcare vouchers and other social services related to their children
  • Adults:

  • Teach parents how to identify safe, quality childcare and work with independent childcare centers to meet the specific needs of their children
  • Teach or facilitate parenting classes at GNC and affordable housing complexes where past residents are housed
  • Operations:

  • Adhere to Program budget
  • Collaborate with the Program Supervisor to create and update standard operating procedures for all childcare activities and programs.
  • Train/support volunteers providing services
  • Occasional public speaking and advocating for Good Neighbor Center
  • Support the goals of the organization in a team-oriented environment
  • develop and deploy all programs with a DEI and trauma informed lens
  • attend training on CPR, first aid, trauma informed care, harm reduction, de-escalation, attachment parenting, Reggio Emilia child development practices, and other topics related to health, safety, trust and belonging.
  • Other tasks as assigned
  • Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor degree and two years of experience or six years of related work experience
  • Experience working with school age children in an academic setting
  • Knowledge of education resources and school systems
  • Ability to fully adhere to mandatory reporter requirements
  • All new hires must pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check
  • Clean driving record
  • Qualifications Preferred:

  • Bachelor degree in Education; Child Development, Social Work, Child Psychology or related major
  • Spanish-English Bilingual
  • CPR & Trauma Informed Training
