Senator Mark Meek is seeking a Legislative Assistant for the 2025 legislative session. This is a full-time, limited-duration position based at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, OR with occasional work in District 20.
This position will help lead the office’s constituent services and outreach efforts, with some policy and research tasks. The right candidate will be highly motivated and detail oriented, possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and have an interest in public policy issues and the legislative process. This position will also require the ability to be self-directed and work independently with minimal supervision at times.
Senator Mark Meek is a father, small business owner, and U.S. Air Force veteran who was first elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 2016, where he served for three terms. In 2022 he was elected to the Oregon State Senate by the voters of Senate District 20, which includes the communities of Oregon City, Gladstone, Happy Valley, and parts of unincorporated Clackamas County.
During his legislative service, Senator Meek has been a leader on issues related to tax and finance, housing, business, and economic development. He currently serves as Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance and Revenue.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Constituent Services: Draft responses to constituent messages and answer phone calls; help constituents with requests for assistance and respond to their questions; track constituent feedback and help keep the office aware of local issues and concerns in the district
- District Outreach: Plan and coordinate in-district town halls and events; build and maintain relationships with community leaders and constituents; attend events on behalf of the Senator; create outreach materials.
- Communications: Serve as a primary point-of-contact for the office. Draft and implement a general communications plan including, but not limited to: newsletters, editorials and opinion pieces, press releases, website and social media updates, etc.
- Policy and Research: Prepare and present policy research; write drafts of testimony and floor speeches; create materials (e.g. one-pagers, presentation slides, etc.); and other policy and research tasks to support the Senator’s legislative agenda.
- Other duties as assigned.
Recommended Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience*.
*An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate ability to perform the duties of the position may be considered.
Salary & Duration
Salary begins at $3,735/month but may be higher depending on experience. Final compensation is determined by the Legislative Assembly’s HR Department based on applicant’s level of experience. Full healthcare benefits are provided.
This is a limited duration position for the 2025 Legislative Session, beginning in December 2024 and ending in July 2025.
