About Harper’s Playground
Harper’s Playground is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Portland, OR. Our mission is to inspire vital communities by creating innovative playgrounds for people of all abilities. Outdoor, nature-based, social play, which is uniquely critical to childhood development, is glaringly limited in communities across the country. Children from underserved and under-represented populations are at a particular disadvantage. While neighborhood playgrounds should offer a landscape of opportunity, near ubiquitous design flaws mean that these spaces do considerable harm. This is particularly devastating for families experiencing economic disparity with limited resources for supplemental play activities, which disproportionately includes communities of color and those experiencing disability.

Harper’s Playground exists to respond to these challenges by creating a design solution at the intersection of play, inclusion and nature. The ethos of Harper’s Playground centers on radical inclusion. We create playscapes where ALL are invited and welcomed to participate in and benefit from the full power of vibrant, natural, outdoor play.


POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Communications Manager will function as a core part of the Harper’s Playground team and work closely with a small yet growing staff to develop, manage, and execute communications strategies through social media, email, web and graphic design, and digital marketing platforms. This position requires a passion for storytelling and the skills to expand and ensure our brand supports and promotes our mission, vision, and values.

KEY GOALS OF THE POSITION | PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Executive Director to establish and execute marketing and communication strategies.
  • Manage and curate an engaging marketing schedule and the operation of social media platforms to inform and inspire; ensure adherence to and consistency in the Harper’s Playground brand and voice across channels.
  • Collaborate with the Development Manager to identify, analyze, and recommend current and emerging marketing practices to enhance fundraising and donor stewardship activities.
  • Develop and manage a wide range of marketing and communications campaigns which may include social and online media, print media, and direct mail.
  • Lead or assist in the creation of compelling storytelling pieces with videos, photos, and graphics, to further demonstrate the impact of Harper’s Playground’s work; understand and implement inclusive communications strategies to engage, educate, and inspire people from a variety of backgrounds and locations.
  • Manage contractor and vendor relationships within the marketing budget.
  • Maintain website and ensure the website is accurate and current.
  • Lead remapping of existing website.
  • Regularly track, analyze, and optimize web, social media, email performance.
  • Craft and package Harper’s Playground’s project and grant proposals, including the creation and maintenance of project cut sheets or specifications.
  • Help manage annual September fundraising event, in addition to smaller volunteer or donor events throughout the year, and develop related marketing and promotional materials.
  • Set up ecommerce platform and manage creation of Harper’s Playground branded merchandise.
  • Develop media plans, establish relationships with media outlets, and write press releases.


CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will thrive working independently or in a small group to deliver on the marketing, web, social media, and graphic design needs of a growing and impactful organization. We are looking for someone with most if not all of the following skills and attributes:

  • Sense of humor and ability to be flexible! Comfort with problem-solving and innovating
  • Places equity and inclusion at the center of all aspects of work
  • Experience working with diverse populations, and an ability to connect and communicate with a broad spectrum of people, including those with a diversity of economic, cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and educational backgrounds, age and abilities, and life experiences
  • Possess a keen design eye and ability to translate the team’s design vision
  • Strong understanding of brand building and messaging
  • Education in a related field, such as communications, marketing or journalism plus a few years of related professional experience
  • Understanding of development, fundraising, and non-profit organizations
  • Demonstrated passion for our mission, vision, and values
  • A commitment to maintaining honest, respectful, and open communication
  • Excellent written communication skills and copy-editing abilities, including a working knowledge of AP style
  • Nuanced understanding of written and visual messaging
  • Demonstrated experience working with websites and managing standard social media platforms, including analytics knowledge
  • Ability to take initiative and work creatively, launching new ideas or driving process improvements
  • Comfortable working independently as well as a part of a team
  • Strong graphic design skills and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite preferred
  • Proficient computer skills including: Wordpress, email marketing, and HTML
  • Experience in event management is a huge plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT: We maintain office space at 1477 NW Everett in Portland, but we primarily work from home. Much of this position will be teleworking for the foreseeable future. We will often meet offsite, convene regularly at playgrounds, and we hold events for or with community partners (sometimes in the evenings or on weekends).
