In 1993, Friends of the Children opened its doors with three friends serving 24 children. Today, Friends of the Children–Portland has 50 Friends guiding, supporting and mentoring almost 500 children across the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area. Our mission is to impact generational change by empowering youth who are facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with professional mentors—12+ years, no matter what.

Position Overview

The Marketing & Communications Coordinator provides brand leadership and is accountable for establishing and executing the overall strategy for marketing, communications, and online fundraising efforts. They oversee the development and delivery of compelling messages and content to the community, measure performance, and enrich the position and awareness of Friends of the Children–Portland.

The Marketing & Communications is responsible for building and maintaining a digital audience. They mold successful marketing plans that increase the reach of the organization and deepen existing relationships that result in increased online giving. They drive cross-media and multi-channel marketing strategies using website/blog content, email campaigns, search and display advertising, SEO and SEM tactics, video content, and share-worthy social media content.

The Marketing & Communications Coordinator oversees traditional marketing campaigns. They provide creative direction and project management for all print materials and mailed appeals. They utilize public relations and earned media strategies to amplify our messaging and reach a larger audience.

The Marketing & Communications Coordinator works collaboratively with program staff and Managers, design consultants, vendors, and members of the PR & Marketing Committee.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal colleagues and external partners to communicate Friends of the Children’s mission, accomplishments, initiatives, and values.
  • Work with the Chief Development Officer to establish and execute marketing and communication strategies.
  • Manages wide range of communication campaigns which may include social and online media, print media, direct mail, and other multimedia.
  • Identify, analyze, and recommend current and emerging marketing practices to enhance fundraising and donor stewardship activities.
  • Coordinate with team members to plan and implement content marketing and fundraising campaigns and to develop digital and print media materials.
  • Ensure adherence to Friends of the Children’s brand.
  • Manage contractor and vendor relationships and marketing and communications budget.
  • Understand and carry out inclusive communications strategies that engage, educate and inspire people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ensure all content and materials are culturally responsive and authentically represent Friends of the Children’s mission and core values.
  • Manages daily operation of social media platforms.
  • Maintain Friends of the Children’s website and collaborate with all departments to ensure the website is accurate and current.
  • Manage and curate a quality, engaging email marketing schedule, coordinating with development team and program staff to celebrate achievements, share compelling stories, promote fundraising events, and donor engagement opportunities.
  • Assist in the creation of compelling storytelling pieces with accompanying videos, photos and graphics, to demonstrate the impact of Friends of the Children’s work.
  • Assist with development of written and visual content for a variety of formats, including newsletters, reports, brochures, website, emails, social media, advertising and press releases.
  • Utilize internal and nonprofit-specific marketing benchmarks to measure the effectiveness of campaigns and generate status reports to internal and external stakeholders
  • Regularly track, analyze, and optimize website, social media, email, and Google Grant performance using Google Analytics and native platform data.


Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that may include public speaking and presentations.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects from beginning to end of lifecycle.
  • Strong knowledge of key project management principles, processes, and tools.
  • Knowledge of and cultivating relationships with local Portland media.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field, AND
  • Three to five years of related experience.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and Teams, CMS and CRM platforms, Adobe Creative Cloud, and project management/collaboration tools.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field, AND
  • Three to five years of related experience.


Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.

Salary Range:

  • $45,000-$50,000
