The Portland Art Museum (referred to as Museum) invites applications for the position of Protection Services Officer. We currently have full-time, part-time, and on-call roles available. The Protection Services Officer (PSO) is a member of the Protection Services team, which performs a critical role in protecting the safety of visitors, staff, and Museum property. PSO’s work in various locations throughout the Museum including the lobby, control room, loading dock, Mark building, and patrolling campus.
Duties & Responsibilities
This PSO is stationed in Museum lobbies interacting with visitors and staff and is responsible for promoting a welcoming environment while balancing the art of de-escalation and initiating appropriate responses to safety and security issues.
- Acts as the first responder to disruptive persons entering the lobbies and adjacent areas
- Interacts with visitors in a welcoming manner by assisting with wayfinding and providing information related to the Museum collection, public programs, and events
- Communicate museum policies in a respectful manner using flexibility and discretion to achieve a safe and positive outcome
- Helps adherence to the “Visitor Agreement to Safe & Inclusive Spaces”
- Resolve conflict using de-escalation techniques and upholding equity and inclusion values
- Removes and trespasses visitors if needed from the campus who exhibit harassment, discrimination, threatening or disrespectful behaviors
- Communicating with law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical personnel as needed
The PSO in the control room protects the Museum, its visitors, staff, and collection by providing a professional and proactive security control room operation service. This role is responsible for monitoring live video feeds, security, and life safety systems, coordinating the Museum’s response to incidents and alarm activations. Other functions include:
- Calling law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical personnel as needed
- Initiating building evacuations
- Dispatches PSO’s to perform routine tasks and respond to requests for assistance
- Important notification functions via phone, email, radio or Alert Media
- Document activity and write reports
- Issue Keys and Visitor badges
- Lost and Found management
Loading Dock & Mail Room
The PSO in the loading dock & mail room maintains the security and safety of this station while performing important functions and services. These include:
- Overseeing shipments and deliveries
- Processing mail and parcels
- Documentation and notification responsibilities
- Supports Control Room operations
The PSO patrolling will frequently move about the galleries and public spaces and provide a visible and reassuring security presence to keep the Museum’s collections and visitors safe. Other functions include:
- Opening and closing the Museum
- Gallery inspections
- Exterior patrols
- Escorting vendors
- Respectfully reminding visitors of museum policies
- Responding to requests for assistance
- Responding to and investigating alarms
- Provide backup support to lobby PSOs
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Promptly address situations that could negatively impact the visitor’s experience, Museum collections, facilities, and staff by understanding and applying safety and Museum policies and procedures
- Initiate evacuation of assigned areas during emergencies while following security procedures and applied training
- Report and document incidents and hazardous conditions with objectivity, respect and an awareness of racial equity and free of assumptions, bias, or stereotypes
- Utilize radio for department communications and other technology such as computers, iPad, etc
- Attend ongoing training and learning opportunities related to the collection, special exhibitions, and equity & inclusion and accessibility, emergency procedures, de-escalation techniques, and bi-annual CPR & AED training
- Promote and support institutional equity and inclusion goals
- Maintain confidentiality regarding the Museum’s proprietary information and operations
- Performs other related duties as assigned

- High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and education required
- Current Oregon Department of Public Standards Safety Training (DPSST) Unarmed certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
- CPR & AED training certification (or obtained within 30 days of employment)
- Prior security experience
- Familiarity with access control, CCTV, and fire systems
- Full-time, part-time, and on-call status available
- Schedule / Hours: Day shifts, flexible work days and hours
- Onsite / Not Remote
- Overtime as needed
- Evening hours and must be available to work weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary
- Works with emergency equipment including first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and AED devices
- Occasionally work outdoors to secure the premises
- Occasionally lift / push / pull up to 50lbs in emergencies
- Frequently ascends and descends stairs
- Occasionally remains stationary for prolonged periods but in an emergency will require rapid movement through the Museum campus
- Occasionally grasping and handling objects such as pens, computer mouse, and radio
- Frequently talking with colleagues and visitors
- Occasionally operates a computer and other office equipment, such as a phone, iPad, and printer
- Frequently listening and communicating with callers on the radio

- Non-exempt / hourly
- Budgeted compensation is within pay grade C ($15.67min - $18.02mid - $20.37max), depending on experience
- Shift differentials eligible, for hours worked onsite:
- Evening hours (6:00pm-12:00am) will be paid an additional $1.00 per hour
- Night hours (12:01am-6:00am) will be paid an additional $2.00 per hour
