The Facilities Maintenance Technician functions as a technical expert, providing trouble shooting for maintenance issues and works collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to assess, identify, plan, and fulfill maintenance activities. Under the general direction of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the Facilities Maintenance Technician performs preventive maintenance and repair of heating, cooling, ventilation systems, and other building equipment such as lighting, plumbing, electrical and office furniture. Work is performed throughout the city in a variety of office types, including public settings with a focus on customer service. Successful candidates must have experience with building heating systems to recognize operating conditions that may lead to breakdown or inefficient operation, as well as performing building maintenance tasks requiring a variety of mechanical skills and the ability to utilize smart phones and tablets to operate HVAC equipment and track preventative maintenance schedules.

Typical Duties/Examples of Work:
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, or replacement of facility systems such as induction and air handling units, refrigeration units, plumbing (including altercations), electrical, mechanical systems and related system components, including sensors and related hardware and software; tests systems’ competency and devices to evaluates performance; participates in developing preventive maintenance plans.
  • Monitor facilities structures and conducts structural inspections for safety.; performs minor repairs to building plumbing, low voltage, and line voltage electric systems, door hardware, fire, life, and safety protection equipment/systems, sprinkler systems, irrigation lines, fans, lights and related.
  • Inspect buildings and facilities to identify repair and maintenance projects; provide technical assistance and make recommendations.
  • Recognize projects requiring the assistance of contractors or vendors; ability to describe work to be performed. Escort and monitor work completed by vendors and contractors.
  • Respond to emergency calls
  • Perform related duties as assigned
  • This position requires reporting to the Portland Building and other locations. This is not a remote position.
An ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to safety and OSHA standards. Although not required, familiarity with direct digital controls and building automation systems as well as Backflow certification.

The Current Vacancies are within the Office of Management and Finance. However this list may be utilized to fill future vacancies within Fire & Rescue.

Fire & Rescue may have upcoming vacancies. As a Facilities Maintenance Technician for Fire & Rescue you will perform preventative maintenance and repair of heating, cooling, ventilation systems, household appliances, and other building equipment such as lights, plumbing, and office furniture. Work requires familiarity with building heating systems to recognize operating conditions that may lead to breakdown or inefficient operation. The work also involves performing minor building maintenance tasks requiring a variety of mechanical skills.

For Fire & Rescue positions candidates will need the following additional experience:
  • Basic knowledge of appliance repair, such as clothes washer, dryer, dish washer, Ovens, cook tops, and refrigerators.

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement

Work Location
Many positions within the City are designated as hybrid and currently the City requires you to work in-person one day per week. Beginning in April 2023, most hybrid employees will be expected to perform at least half of their work in-person. Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their supplemental question responses and resume how their education, training, work experience and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

1. Knowledge of building/facility automated control systems and components.
2. Knowledge of installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems.
3. Experience with building maintenance and repair including scheduling and performing preventive maintenance inspections.
4. Experience performing installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems (for example: the operation of chillers, fan systems and pumps).
5. Experience performing repair and replacement of facilities’ electrical components.

Applicants must also possess:
  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by date of hire.
  • A current Limited Maintenance Electrical (LME) license or higher Oregon electrical license.

  • A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
