After a period of transition and adaptation around the pandemic, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon (PHFO) is entering an exciting phase of growth. We are currently seeking individuals with the time, experience, and passion to serve a two-year board term and help our organization fulfill the vision of an Oregon where everyone is healthy and thriving, with access to affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food. 

PHFO is currently looking for board members with a range of backgrounds, experiences and skills. We are committed to building a board that represents our clients across the state and supports our holacratic organization. Individuals who have lived experience with food insecurity; those living outside the Portland metro area; and those with experience in decentralized, power-sharing organizations are strongly encouraged to apply.

We envision an Oregon where everyone is healthy and thriving, with access to affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food. To bring that vision into reality our mission is to raise awareness about hunger, connect people to nutrition programs, and advocate for systemic changes that end hunger.

VOLUNTEER BOARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Board provides leadership in development and stewardship of PHFO’s strategic mission, is responsible for financial and governance oversight, and supports the Co-Executive Directors and staff. Board members serve for 2-year terms and are responsible for the following:

  • Ensure all activities and decisions of the organization are in line with PHFO’s by-laws, mission, values, commitment to equity and strategic plan.
  • Actively engage in discussions and decision-making processes about goals, strategies and policies of PHFO and the Board.
  • Ensure strong fiduciary oversight and financial management.
  • Support the Co-Executive Directors by proactively identifying issues needing input or oversight by the Board to ensure these issues are placed on future Board meeting agendas.
  • Serve as an ambassador for PHFO in the community to educate on the issue of hunger and raise awareness of PHFO’s mission and programs.
  • Participate in fundraising through time, effort and connections. Active participation in fundraising efforts is expected. Personal monetary contributions at any level are valued but not required for board membership. 
  • Review board meeting packets, participate in at least 75% of monthly board meetings, and participate in at least one committee.
  • Utilize personal and professional networks to recruit qualified board members.
  • Respond promptly to emails or phone calls requiring a board vote or board discussion.
  • In addition, board officers will perform the duties described in this document. 

TIME COMMITMENTS

  • Monthly board meetings are virtual and occur on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 4:30-6:30pm - attendance at 75% of board meetings is expected.
  • Committee meetings are TBD, but are typically one additional meeting per month.
  • Approximately 5-6 hours of work per month for board members at-large and 7-8 hours per month for officers.
  • 2 year term, board members may serve two consecutive terms
