Position Title: Executive Director
Duration: Full-time, permanent, exempt position.
Location: NE Portland
Compensation: $ 85,000 - $ 120,000, depending on training and experience, health care insurance cost sharing, paid time off for sick, personal and family leave, vacation and holidays.
Work Schedule: This position has a variable and flexible schedule that includes regular evening meetings and some weekend events.
Who We are and What We do
The mission of the German American Society is to preserve and promote, primarily in the greater Portland metro area, as well as Southwest Washington the unique and valuable charitable and educational elements of German heritage.
The German American Society operates popular German language program for all ages and all levels. The organization’s signature cultural events, such as Oktoberfest and the December Holiday and Christmas Market draw thousands of people. Founded 150 years ago, Society is the steward of a 17,000 square foot historic building which houses the language program and is a hub for community events, has a healthy endowment created by its founders and has an annual budget of $ 400,000.
The Board of Directors envisions a growing and sustainable charitable, cultural and educational society that welcomes all, and is well-known and valued for events and programs that increase understanding and share appreciation for German heritage.
The Executive Director will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the organization, including implementing the strategic plan and accomplishing priority projects. The Executive Director will report to the President and Vice-President of the Board of Directors, with regular communication with the entire Board. The Executive Director will supervise the staff, including the Language Program Director, Contractors and Administrative staff.
Key Skills
Excellent financial management skills, including developing budgets and managing finances
Familiarity with the laws and regulations governing nonprofit organizations
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including social media
Adept at working with volunteer committees and volunteer-driven events
Ability to prioritize and respond to shifting conditions in an organization with a small staff
Understanding of event management, especially large community events
Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate staff, and oversee contractors and vendors
Key Experience
Proven track record of leadership in a nonprofit organization
Effective collaboration with a nonprofit Board of Directors
Experience in adult education or language schools helpful
Engagement in nonprofit fundraising, including sponsorships and membership
Property management experience helpful
Professional experience coordinating large community events
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent professional experience
Minimum of five years' experience in a leadership position at nonprofit organizations
Deep appreciation for German culture
Knowledge of German language is helpful but not required
