Portland Parks & Recreation is seeking an Apprentice Facilities Maintenance Technician!

Job Appointment: Full-Time
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri. 8-5, alternate schedule may be available after probation. Classroom training is held on weekday evenings and some Saturdays. Attendance is required for classroom training.
Work Location: Portland Parks & Rec Tabor Yard Facility, 6437 SE Division St., Portland, OR 97206. Apprentice will be attending classroom training at Portland Community College Swan Island Trades Center.

Position Summary:

The Facilities Maintenance Technician Apprentice (FMTA), under the direction and supervision of journey-level managers, supervisors and team members, assists with and learns to perform preventative maintenance to plumbing, electrical, mechanical systems and related system components.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Assist with the maintenance of induction, air handling, and refrigeration units, including servicing, cleaning, inspecting and troubleshooting all related equipment.
  • Assist with and learn to repair and maintain facilities structures to perform minor repairs to building plumbing, low-voltage, and line voltage electric systems, fire, life and safety protection equipment/ systems, sprinkler systems.
  • Take apart equipment, systems, troubleshoot, perform necessary repairs and then put the equipment, system back together in working order.

The Apprentice Program:

This is an 8000-hour (approximately 4 years) program that provides apprentices with the knowledge and skills required to be a journey Limited Maintenance Electrician, working as a Facilities Maintenance Technician, through a combination of on-the-job and outside classroom training.

In addition to the 8000 hours of on-the-job training, 576 hours of related classroom training is required. The Apprentices' skill development is assessed throughout the program and raises are based on progress in the program. Each apprentice will be required to enroll as student with PCC and pass any required math testing administered by the college. They will also be required to submit monthly job reports to verify training is on-track with the program adjectives.

The 8000 hours of On-The-Job Training are in the following areas:

A. Motors and generators

1. Assembly and testing

2. Repair and maintenance

3. Internal and external connections to change direction of rotation and speed, and for a

change of supply of voltage

4. Motor setting, drives, pulleys, gears, coupling devices

5. Related mechanical equipment (Boilers and Chillers)

6. In place motor cleaning

B. Control: Manual and automatic, including magnetic and solid state, programmable logic

controls and direct digital controls

C. Troubleshooting- Non-Working Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing systems and components

D. Lighting

E. Electrical and Mechanical drawings

The 576 hours of classroom related training is in the following areas:

A. Electricity and electronics

B. Fundamental mechanical principles

C. Mathematics of the trade

D. Federal, state, and local electrical laws, codes and rules

E. Blueprint reading, electrical drawings and pictorial, block, one-line and schematic diagrams

F. Industrial electrical safety

G. Brazing and CFC Certification

I. Electrical and Mechanical Controls

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

1. Basic knowledge of the trades (plumbing, electrical, HVAC/refrigeration)

2. Ability to handle and safely use tools used in the trades. (i.e. pliers, screwdrivers, electronic meters, hammers)

3. Ability to work and communicate effectively with co-workers in a diverse workforce

4. Ability to understand and operate technical equipment such as work-related testing

equipment, phones, tables and computers.

5. The ability to learn, read and understand Technical manuals, Maintenace documents, and Electrical drawings.

Applicants must also possess:

  • A valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
  • A high school diploma or GED Equivalency Certificate at the time of hire.
  • Ability to register as a PCC student: Limited Maintenance Electrician | Apprenticeship and Trades at PCC
  • Ability to pass the Physical Capabilities Test after an offer of employment has been made and accepted.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical examination after an offer of employment has been made and accepted.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
