Position Summary Portland YouthBuilders (PYB) is a non-profit vocational alternative high school and pre- apprenticeship program dedicated to serving young adults ages 17-26. PYB’s mission is to help disadvantaged young people transform their lives through education, training, and the development of viable career pathways. PYB’s state certified pre-apprenticeship construction training is offered through two programs: a year-long YouthBuild program, which offers high school completion along with pre-apprenticeship training; and the 9-week Bridge program offering pre-apprenticeship training for high school graduates.

The Construction Trainer will supervise and instruct crews of students in the new construction and remodeling of affordable housing. This position will be primarily based in Washington County, with approximately one day per week spent at our SE Portland campus. The Construction Trainer is responsible for daily oversight, organization, safety and quality control of work performed on assigned projects. They work in partnership with other construction staff to plan daily crew assignments, plan project schedules, and share teaching responsibilities. They will also work on teams with academic teachers, counselors and career development professionals in a collaborative effort to help students develop personal skills and overcome barriers as they strive to define and prepare to achieve their career goals.

Reports to: Construction Program Manager Schedule: 40 hours per week (1.0 FTE) Starting Salary: Dependent upon candidate experience & qualifications Employment Status: Regular, Exempt Benefits: Benefits: 7 weeks paid vacation during school closures--4 weeks in summer; 2 weeks in winter; 1

week Spring Break. Paid Summer break is prorated for the first year based on months of service (e.g.- an April 1 start date would receive 5.5 days summer vacation, but a September 1 start date would receive 18.25 days in the first year). Most state recognized holidays are paid and employees accrue 1 personal day/month. PYB contributes $650/month to Section 125 cafeteria plan for health care benefits, flexible spending accounts, and/or retirement savings; and provides a dollar-for-dollar employer match for retirement contributions up to 3% of salary with immediate vesting. PYB provides employee-paid life and long-term disability insurance. PYB offers a dynamic environment with great team of students and staff.

QUALIFYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE • Minimum 5 years experience working in the construction industry or construction related trades • Strong carpentry skills, with hands-on experience in most phases of residential construction; strong framing and

finish carpentry skills required • Strong interest in working with and supporting a diverse group of young adults to help them develop and

achieve goals • Preference given to candidates with training and/or teaching experience • Ability to collaborate, clearly communicate, and problem solve • Experience organizing and supervising construction sites • Able to work in Microsoft Word, Google Suite (Docs, sheets, slides, and classroom) and email; capacity to

competently use a database after training is provided; other computer skills a plus. • A good driving record with a valid Oregon Driver’s License, the ability to drive various personal and construction

vehicles, and small buses; • Ability to lift 50 pounds and to perform work in all typical residential construction conditions including roofs and

crawl spaces • Ability to demonstrate and perform high production techniques • Concrete forming and concrete finishing skills are a plus • A fingerprint-based criminal background check and drug test will be administered prior to employment for

candidates under consideration.
