Part-Time Temporary Program Coordinator

Oregon Humanities (OH), an independent nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, connects Oregonians to ideas that change lives and transform communities. OH works toward the vision of an Oregon that invites diverse perspectives, explores challenging questions, and strives for just communities.

We are seeking a part-time (20 hours per week), temporary (September 2026–June 2027) program coordinator with a primary focus of supporting our Humanity in Perspective course (HIP). This course offers free, for-credit college-level humanities courses for people who are living on low incomes and/or facing barriers to continuing their education. We are relaunching this program after a year of hiatus. The 2027 year program will be in partnership with organizations serving people in the recovery community. 

This is a hybrid position with much of the planning and preparation taking place remotely and the course taking place in person in Portland, Oregon, most likely in the evening weekday hours. The program coordinator must be living in the Portland metro area to perform the duties of this position.

• September–December: Prepare for the January 2027 program relaunch. Tasks include:

  • Provide periodic project status updates

  • Identify and finalize community partners who will help recruit students

  • Identify course timelines and meeting hours to meet Bard College credit requirements

  • Recruit and support the teaching team who will develop their own curricular elements

  • Develop the curriculum framework with the program director and teaching team

  • Secure the venue(s) for the class including items such as making sure all venue agreements are approved and insurance certificates are sent on time.

  • Work with community partners to identify student support needs (e.g., technology, childcare, transportation)

  • Develop recruitment materials for students

  • Conduct outreach for students in partnership with collaborating organizations.

  • Screen students for course eligibility.

  • Develop website content for promotions and relaunch

  • Other project-specific requirements as mutually identified and agreed upon during the contract period

• January–March: Launch and support the Winter term 2027 course. Tasks include:

  • Maintain relationships with the community partners

  • Coordinate among the various teaching team members

  • Prepare course materials: examples include making copies of readings, assembling night-of supplies

  • Ensure classroom environment and night-of logistical requirements are prepared and operational for scheduled sessions

  • Open the classroom space, be present during class to support students, reset classroom space, and lock up after class

  • Establish clear guidelines on confidentiality, respect, and class crosstalk early

  • Keep student teacher professional boundaries intact while remaining warm and supportive

  • Support student needs such as assisting in problem solving computer access, transportation assistance, materials from missed classes

  • Coordinate with designated organizational volunteers or interns as required for project milestones

  • Be present at each class meeting

  • Support field trip logistics

  • Track student attendance, grades

  • Generate data, evaluation, and reports for Oregon Humanities

  • Support student credit documentation process

• January–March: Prepare for a Spring term 2027 launch. Tasks similar to those listed above and refined in collaboration with the program director.

• April–June: Launch and support the Spring term 2027 course. Tasks similar to those listed above and refined in collaboration with the program director.

• Ongoing course support and wrap up the academic year. Tasks include:

  • Periodic project status updates with Oregon Humanities program director

  • Student support (work with community partners to identify student support needs (e.g., technology, childcare, transportation)

  • Refine the curriculum framework

  • Support the teaching team

  • Secure the venue(s) for the class

  • Check-ins with community partners

  • Develop recruitment materials for students

  • Develop website content for promotions and relaunch

  • Assemble materials needed for course approval with partner organizations

  • Evaluation and assessment for HIP

  • Other program support as needed:

    • Possible additional pieces as time permits (development of a volunteer/mentor support system for HIP students, alumni network engagement)

    • Support for other Oregon Humanities Programs

Compensation:

This role will begin in September 2026 and continue through the end of June 2027 with the possibility of extending this role beyond that time period. The hourly rate range is $26/hour to $28/hour, depending on experience, for 20 hours per week. Beyond the hours for the class, which are typically two nights per week, the working hours can be set in collaboration with the program director. This is a nonexempt position, paid hourly.

Temporary employees are eligible to earn PTO, which will be prorated based on a full-time schedule, but are not eligible for vacation, holiday pay, or other benefits. Employment status does not change simply because an employee works more or fewer hours.

This role is eligible for a $60/month reimbursement for internet and/or phone use to support the work.

Temporary employees are not eligible for other organizational benefits such as retirement contributions, medical, dental, and vision insurance.
