The Biology Departmental Associate is responsible for teaching and organizing laboratory courses at the introductory level in biology. Introductory biology courses span disciplines, and this position involves working with faculty to develop, implement, and administer a wide range of lab activities and assignments. This position also involves assisting students one-on-one during office hours, grading assignments, supervising student laboratory teaching assistants, and assisting faculty with other aspects of course management as needed. This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary of $65,000. The college’s working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. What You’ll Do (Essential Duties)

  • Teach the laboratory components of core introductory biology courses across a range of subdisciplines in collaboration with faculty in a team-taught course
  • Collaborate with faculty members to design and implement curriculum
  • Serve as a consultant and mentor for students majoring in biology
  • Teach individual lab sections during each semester
  • Grade student assignments and reports
  • Maintain currency on the teaching and learning of biology by developing key contacts at professional organizations and other schools, track current literature, and learn and evaluate emerging ideas
  • Interface with the biology stockroom about preparing for labs, equipment needs, and other items related to lab set-up
  • Provide support for students, including referrals to student support infrastructure at Reed (e.g., Student Life, Disability and Accessibility Resources, and tutoring.).
