Description

Reed College seeks a Library Night Supervisor to oversee evening library operations. The night supervisor is a member of the library’s Access Services team and reports to the Circulation Manager. In this role you will ensure that students and faculty receive the services they need and that operations are running smoothly during evening hours at a busy residential college library.

The work hours for this position are 6:00pm to 2:00am, Sunday through Thursday, with occasional Saturday shifts in rotation with other staff. Summer and winter hours when classes are not in session are 9am–5pm, Monday through Friday. This is a full-time, non-exempt role with starting pay between $23.00- $25.00 per hour. Pay offers are dependent on experience and are determined in conjunction with an internal pay equity assessment.

Who You Are

  • You have at least two years of library experience or two years of experience in a related or relevant customer service role.
  • You are able to oversee a large facility with regards to general supervision and monitoring of library patrons and student workers, noting facility maintenance issues, and keeping the library safe.

  • You have been commended for being friendly and having excellent customer service skills, even when handling difficult interactions. You can make judgement calls and know when to ask for assistance.

  • People describe you as reliable and you are always on time.

  • You are interested in learning new technologies and making processes more efficient.

  • You have experience working with and enjoy working alongside college students.

  • You are self-aware. You understand your own culture, identity, biases, prejudices, power, privilege, and stereotypes. You are personally committed to equity and it shows in your work.

  • You enjoy working with others who have backgrounds and views that are different from you.

  • You have the ability to lift up to 20 lbs repeatedly and the mobility to shelve books on bottom and top shelves, using step stools if needed.

What You’ll Do

  • Supervise the circulation desk of the library from 6pm-2:00am, including working alongside student workers.
  • Answer questions for patrons about the library and Reed College.

  • Monitor the main library phone line.

  • Do periodic walk-throughs of the library and note any issues.

  • Engage with disruptive patrons so that they understand acceptable conduct in the library.

  • Ensure that patrons who are not following library expectations leave the building, contacting campus safety officers for assistance if necessary.

  • Assist in Access Services-related duties, including course reserves, public computers and printers, interlibrary loan, and Summit lending between regional academic libraries.

  • Provide service at the circulation desk as a lead staff member approximately 10 hours/week.

  • Work a rotating Saturday supervisor shift twice per semester.

  • Coordinate annual inventories of collections during winter and summer breaks.
