At the Community for Positive Aging (CfPA), we are dedicated to fostering a healthier, more inclusive and connected Portland for adults 55+ through educational and recreational programming, support services, and care. We are dedicated to creating safe, accessible spaces and opportunities for older community members to thrive. Job Title: Director of Programs

Position Type:  Exempt, Full-time, 40 hrs/week

Working Location: 80% in-person, 20% remote - our on-site offices are located within a lively and vibrant community center. We are excited to have team members join us who thrive in this type of environment!

Salary: $90,000-100,000 annually depending on experience

Essential Roles & Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership:

  • Lead with empathy and the values of The Community for Positive Aging, including anti-racism, anti-ageism, and equity based practices. Commit to personal growth, learning, and transformation, taking the initiative to expand your understanding of racial justice and related equity principles, issues, and practice and how they apply to your and our work.
  • Together with the Executive Director and Finance and Operations Director provide essential leadership with focus on implementation and execution.
  • Together with the Executive Director, Finance and Operations Director, and Board of Directors, provide strategic leadership and organizational development that meets our mission and realizes our goal of a more unified agency to better serve our community. Understand and integrate racial justice and equity based practices into individual and teamwork plans and broader strategic planning efforts.
  • Fill in for the Executive Director during time off or others absences.
  • Work closely with the leadership team in the development of new policies and processes to assure needs of the team are addressed and the process will enable clients to have better access to services provided by CfPA.
  • Provide leadership and direction in organizational integrity issues.
  • Oversee day-to-day program operations. 
  • Participate in decisions regarding risk mitigation and assist program efforts to analyze and put in place safeguards to assure that risk is managed.
  • Lead and supervise all community programs, partnerships, and volunteer programs.
  • Participation and reporting at Board of Director and Advisory Council meetings.
  • Meaningfully participate in caucus groups, organizational learning sessions, and other opportunities to shape our organizational culture.

Programs Management & Leadership:

  • Provide inspirational leadership to the program team, ensuring a collaborative and empowering work environment. Regularly assess team structure, capabilities and job requirements,making adjustments as needed to support strategic goals.
  • Develop clear program goals, objectives, and performance metrics in alignment with organizational objectives. Lead all aspects of program strategy, planning, and activation, and support program staff in the creation and implementation of work plans.
  • Recruit, select, train, and evaluate program staff members. Provide overall supervision and counsel for programming staff.
  • Lead program managers and staff, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Ensure program staff engagement, support, and development including regularly scheduled program staff meetings, one-on-one meetings, and department meetings.
  • Manage program staff to ensure effectiveness of programs, and ensure the availability of resources needed to implement programs effectively. Implement trauma-informed care when working with employees. 
  • Guide the organization in developing high-quality, values-based training for all program staff and volunteers, with a particular focus on supporting DEI in our internal processes and culture.
  • Identifies key community partners and establishes and/or deepens relationships to better serve the community, advance diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and increases grant funding. Research, develop and maintain relationships with community partners to support CfPA program, staff, and volunteers. Serve as CfPA’s lead for all external program partnerships.
  • Lead community needs assessments, program impact evaluation, and program development with participant input centered in all aspects of program delivery, adaptation and expansion. 
  • Support staff in adapting program operations and models to meet the evolving needs of the community.
  • Supervise all aspects of CfPA’s volunteer programs to recruit, welcome, train, coordinate, and cultivate a diverse team of volunteers who align with CfPA’s mission and values. Ensure that volunteers feel valued and have a sense of meaning and appreciation.
  • Lead in the creation and implementation of program tools and practices across the organization.
  • Provide technical assistance and supervision to the team in developing and implementing program budgets, budget review, writing reports, budget amendments, contract renewal and review, and HIPAA Compliance.
  • In partnership with the Finance and  Operations Director, ensure CfPA has effective data collection and evaluation tools in place to support the needs of CfPA’s programs and to effectively report the outcomes of CfPA’s programs. 
  • Identify best practices and optimize program operations, processes and policies, reporting, information flow, and organizational planning with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.

Administration, Finance, Fundraising & Communications:

  • Collaborate with other staff to raise public awareness of our programs through media, community groups, and our participants.
  • Lead programmatic aspects of budgeting and financial processes and reporting. Monitor financial resources and manage program budgets.
  • Collaborate with other leaders and consultants on the development, communications and marketing plans for the organization.
  • Lead in developing a culture of engagement and philanthropy at CfPA.
  • Collaborate with other leaders in stewardship of donors and other philanthropic relationships.
  • Manage information requests for grants, reports, and other institutional donors.
  • Manage vendors and/or contractors that support program, volunteer and/or community partnership efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and applicable policies set by the Board and regulators.
  • Ensure completion of annual monitoring reports, including government program audits and Compliance Monitoring.

Desired Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Educational background grounded in real-world secondary education. Lived experience as a person with intersectional historically marginalized identities (i.e. BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, older adults, people with disabilities, immigrants and refugees, etc.) in place of educational experience is highly desired.
  • Ability to develop and monitor indicators of organizational culture and engage employees and senior leadership to create organizational change. 
  • Strong background of managing change throughout a distributed system of entities and teams. 
  • Provide the tools and structure to meet the DEI mission of CfPA. 
  • Demonstrated track record in training, coaching and reinforcing peers to approach all work with an equity lens. 
  • Deep content knowledge of the diversity, equity, and inclusiveness best practices for organizations striving to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
  • Proven track record of success engaging with older adults, communities of color and LGBTQ+ communities. 
  • Ability to remain solution-focused and respectful in all interactions with staff, coworkers, vendors, and clients. 
  • Sufficient manual dexterity and physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
  • Familiarity with Portland networks.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to manage complex projects with multiple work streams on tight timelines.
  • Solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Outstanding listening skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Resourcefulness and adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse concepts, individuals, and organizations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (bilingual is an asset).
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite/Google Suite..

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Google Suites. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, drive, talk on the telephone and/or use a PC for long periods of time.
  • Continuously required to read a computer screen; perform repetitive motions of hands and wrist; hear and/or respond to verbal/audio cues.
  • Position is onsite at least 80% of the time.
  • Position requires standing, walking and/or sitting for extended periods of time; also lifting, pushing, pulling and/or carrying objects up to 30 pounds.
