Executive Director

Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Janus Youth Programs Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for strategic planning, fundraising, and management oversight to effectively carry out Janus’ mission supporting youth. The ED represents Janus’ interests to its diverse constituencies including government funders, the philanthropic community, staff and youth served by Janus and the community at large.

The ED is a passionate advocate for creating paths to success for youth, families and the community and can articulate a compelling strategic vision and energize stakeholders to turn that vision into reality.

The ED makes critical strategic decisions, fundraises, innovates, meets challenges and provides leadership for the staff and Board of Janus. The ED cultivates working relationships with grantors and the philanthropic community to expand Janus’ service outreach and creates financial sustainability for its programs. The ED is ultimately responsible for the financial stability, smooth operations, and success of the Janus Youth Programs’ portfolio of programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Strategy Development:
  • Partner closely with the Board of Directors and the Organizational Leadership team in the development and maintenance of a strategic plan, policies and procedures.
  • Leads the implementation and communication of policies and procedures.
  • Leads long and short-term strategies and goals ensuring they support the Janus Youth Programs mission, core values and uses resources effectively.
  • Engages the Program and Administrative Directors and the Board in shaping Janus’ Vision, actively soliciting their input on key priority issues in a timely, effective manner, and formulating recommendations for consideration by the Board based on that input and other considerations.
  • Proactively communicate, inform, discuss and guide Janus staff in issues that require policy decisions, evaluations and direction for new policies, procedures or programs to improve overall operations and programs.
  • Work with the Board to identify and help recruit new members whose personal and professional experience, perspectives, talents, interests and commitment will help further Janus’ mission and financial health.
  • Actively assesses the agency’s program composition and effectiveness and works to identify areas for enhancement, expansion and revision, and potential addition of programs to meet the evolving needs of the youth and community.
• Financial Management:
  • Lead development and administration of a board approved annual operating budget for the agency and all programs, and revisions as required.
  • Thoughtfully monitors the budget throughout the year, adjusting as necessary in partnership with the Fiscal Director and Board of Directors.
• Fundraising and Advocacy:
  • Direct development of fundraising plans, and measures of success, supported by the Advancement Director; fully implements objectives to support annual budget goals and monitors progress monthly.
  • Develop new avenues for revenue generation to sustain operations and changing agency needs, including staffing, and improved agency financial health.
  • Partners in the writing and oversight of grant applications with the Advancement Director and Program Directors.
  • Proactively cultivates relationships with agency funders, grantors, donors, legislators and potential influencers; educating these constituents on the programs, services and community impact of the agency.
  • Attend and participate in professional group initiatives; stay abreast of environmental and political issues the agency is facing and report monthly to the Board executive committee.
• Program Oversight:
  • In partnership with the program directors, the ED ensures operational excellence of all Janus programs, actively analyzing program data to identify areas for enhancement and efficiency.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of current best practices in Janus’ service areas and provides recommendations and guidance for ensuring Janus’ programming is up to date.
  • Drives sustained program control and quality through continuing evaluation of service performance; establishing service and performance metrics with Program and Administrative Directors with results communicated to the Board at least quarterly.
• Leadership:
  • Direct the recruitment, selection, supervision and development of all program and administrative directors, and oversee these efforts of other staff through the leadership of program and administrative directors.
  • Actively fosters development of an overall agency culture which facilitates maximum retention and growth of employees at all levels of the agency.
  • Provide leadership to Janus by developing an effective organizational structure, establishing and maintaining a culture of transparency, accountability and active decision making; working closely with the Board in planning, organizing and directing operations.
  • Create and support effective mechanisms for staff leadership on an agency-wide effort for DEIA, ensuring DEIA is embedded in all agency practices and documents.
  • Establishes, models and encourages a culture of direct, professional communication and accountability and decision-making protocol facilitating the development of a healthy workplace, and creates individual growth opportunities.

  Education and Experience Requirements:

  We recognize that valuable skills and expertise can be gained through both formal education and lived experience. A combination of the below experiences and education will be considered as qualified for this role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience required. Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience of which 3 years’ should be at an executive level in management and administration of social service delivery systems.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multi-program operations and leading teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen and experience managing multiple budgets and funding sources.
