General Function: 

Under the supervision of the Chief Strategy Officer/Deputy CEO, the Director of Development will effectively guide Development functions in coordination with the Chief Strategy Officer, the CEO and the Director of Communications while applying MFS’ approach to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in order to assure that department operations are carried out.

Development Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Chief Strategy Officer/Deputy CEO and maintains regular contact on major Development Department work plan elements
  • Functions as a member of the Leadership Team which includes Director and Executive level position
  • Provides oversight for the Development Department including provision of      help create annual development plan, providing team guidance, work assignments and supervision
  • Identifies prospective donors; individual and business in order to expand donor pool in partnership with CSO/CEO, and co-creates an outreach and solicitation plan
  • Directly reaches out to prospective and current donors in order to reach unrestricted revenue goals
  • Solicits and secures sponsorships for MFS main fundraising events
  • Oversees procurement of assets for event auctions or other items of value needed for MFS fundraising events
  • Maintains donor relations plans for MFS, working closely with the CEO and CSO/Deputy CEO to assure that the agency connects with donors in a variety of ways to ensure their continued sense of connection and ongoing financial support of MFS
  • Remains current on new trends and best practice approaches in the field of nonprofit development work
  • Uses Salesforce data to enhance and improve annual planning and monitoring progress toward goal
  • Supports annual growth of all fundraising programs, assists in setting attainable annual and or campaign goals to increase numbers of new investors, renewing investors, major gift investors, and corporate sponsors
  • Researches, identifies and cultivates prospects including individuals, foundations and corporations which will advance the strategic work of the agency
  • Works collaboratively with CEO to identify prospective board members consistent with plan for board succession.
  • Acts as an ambassador of MFS in building relationships that lead to donor engagement, with an equity lens that engages broad community support for the MFS mission
  • Works with Executive Management Team, Leadership and Management teams, and board members to enhance investor cultivation efforts
  • Sets annual individual giving  and moves management goals to increase fundraising revenue with agency investors by securing major gifts, planned giving and other campaigns as needs arise
  • Supports the Board Development Committee and other Board committees as needed
  • Oversees the MFS Annual Employee Giving Campaign
  • Provide direct supervision to Development staff
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures to support ethical and successful fundraising practices
  • Comply with Metropolitan Family Service policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Effectively and consistently market the organization, communicating about MFS and its programs in a way that is both compelling and on message. Follow marketing guidelines in place when communicating with staff, volunteers, clients, partners, and potential supporters

  • Excellent skills in Google Office suite, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel;
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar client management systems

  • Demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources). Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time; has demonstrated flexible and adaptable style; shown that they are a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
  • Up to date in the field of nonprofit development trends and best practice.  Is current in their professional field, and has shown that they incorporate relevant new information in specific technical area of expertise

Experienced in managing teams and supervision

  • Has experience effectively leading work teams to produce cohesive work flow, and positive team morale. Has proven ability to develop standards and objectives with staff; selects, and trains quality staff; build effective teams, provide feedback on performance and conduct timely performance evaluations and ensure clear quality improvement with corrective action being delivered in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Has shown evidence of being able to embrace varying cultural experiences and communication differences when building diverse teams.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Demonstrated success with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in soliciting major gifts for a non-profit organization; related advanced degree and/or professional certification preferred
  • Successful history of increasing responsibility and experience in managing overall Development operations
  • Fluency and ability to communicate effectively in languages in addition to English is beneficial

Other Requirements:

Personal transportation allowing for travel within the Portland Metropolitan area in a timely manner is preferred, but is not required.  If driving a personal vehicle must maintain a valid driver license for the state of residency, personal auto liability insurance coverage and a driving record permitting coverage under the agency auto liability policy.

Work Environment:

Work is normally performed in an office environment and/or at other locations as deemed necessary.  May require occasional early morning, weekend or evening work.  Position requires ability to sit for extended periods as well as stand occasionally.  Position requires use of computer, telephone, fax machine, copier and may require accessing locations by use of stairs.
