The Position

This position partners and collaborates with the Senior Accountant – Reporting & Compliance and the Finance Department/Business Office Team as well as all other OHS Departments to ensure the best processes and most accurate and timely financial information. This position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of the financial statements by managing expense accounting, including accounts payable, payroll and fixed assets and improving the efficiency of these accounting functions. 

 

Essential Responsibilities

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Processes accounts payable and credit card accounting in an accurate and efficient manner with strong internal controls, ensures accurate capture of in-kind donations, and participates in the implementation of other enhanced purchased processes, including the implementation of a purchase order system.
  • Performs general ledger account reconciliations, verifies accuracy of data, and reports, identifies, and corrects errors.
  • Supports timely monthly, quarterly, half-year, and year-end financial close, including assigned journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations, accruals, and overall maintenance of assigned accounts including prepaid expense amotization and fixed assets.
  • Develops and implements accounting procedures by analyzing current procedures; recommending changes.
  • Partners with HR Generalist to provide backup for payroll processing; prepares payroll and benefit accounting entries.
  • Develops effective partnerships and procedures to ensure key operational and financial targets are met through cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Provides backup for other finance department roles.
  • Answers accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent education or experience
  • 1 years of experience in accounting
  • Must be highly accurate, detail-oriented and capable of analyzing data with creativity and innovation in mind
  • Advanced level Excel and financial reporting skills and intermediate level computer systems management.
  • Able to perform mathematical functions and to comprehend interrelationship of various computer functions.
  • Able to process complex verbal and written instructions and translate them into a series of logical problem solving steps.
  • Able to handle sensitive financial and personnel data according to the highest standards of confidentiality and ethical conduct
  • Able to evaluate the efficiency of programs, systems and procedures and make recommendations for change when needed.
  • Must be willing and able to learn and implement new processes and systems on the job as required for quality improvement and organizational direction.

Working Conditions 

  • Work is performed at home or in an office and medical center/animal shelter environment.
  • Travel between the two campuses may be required.
  • Working at both campuses may be required.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Animal contact and related injuries may occur.
  • Noise exposure varies and sometimes includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations.
  • Pace of work is active and demanding, requiring a high degree of multitasking and ability to adapt to changing priorities while managing concurrent projects/tasks to completion.
  • Contact with angry or emotional people may occur. 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional moving of items up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting and moving of inanimate objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
